At CES 2018, Samsung has unveiled the next generation of its Family Hub refrigerators, and new this time are the addition of Bixby voice control and integration with Samsung’s SmartThings IoT ecosystem.
With the new Bixby update, Family Hub can now recognize individual voices and provide personalized information based on preferences. For example, you can say, “Hi Bixby, what’s new today?” and the fridge read out news, weather, and calendar updates specifically tailored to the user.
On the other hand, the integration with SmartThings ecosystem means users can control and monitor their connected home from the Family Hub screen. Cooking in the kitchen, and the door bell rang? You can now check the security camera’s feed from the fridge’s screen.
Other features on the updated Family Hub include access to various music streaming platforms and live radio apps, mirroring of a Samsung smart TV, and even streaming of content from a smartphone to the fridge. On the premium 4-door Flex model, Samsung’s also put in an AKG speaker for sound that’s “deep in bass and rich in mid-range”.
In addition, Samsung is expanding the Family Hub’s range of content with new collaborations with leading companies like HomeAdvisor, Pinterest, The Weather Company, and Buzzfeed’s Tasty. There’s also a new Meal Planner that provides recipes for the family based on food preferences, dietary restrictions and food expirations dates; and a new Deals app for users to discover shopping bargains. Availability of these features is likely dependent on the region.
Finally, Samsung is expanding the Family Hub platform to four new 4D FDR (4-Door French Door Refrigerator) models, bringing the total to 14.
